Judith Mason was a South African figurative painter, printmaker and sculptor. She was born on 18 May 1938 in Pretoria, South Africa and died on 29 December 2016 in White River, South Africa. Mason trained at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and later at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. She became known for her highly detailed and symbolic paintings that explored themes of identity, power, spirituality and the human condition.
Throughout her career, Mason received numerous accolades and exhibitions for her work. She won the prestigious Sasol Wax Art Award in 1989, and the Irma Stern Merit Award in 1997. In 2006, a major retrospective of her work was held at the Irma Stern Museum in Cape Town.
Mason's paintings are included in the collections of several major institutions, including the Iziko South African National Gallery, the Johannesburg Art Gallery and the Pretoria Art Museum. Her work has also been exhibited in several international venues, including the Venice Biennale in 1978 and the Sao Paolo Biennale in 1989.
